Son M 11 CA MO CA None Lester E. Son M 10 CA MO CA None Victor Robert Anderson was born on Armistice Day, the end of WWI. In tribute to this event and the birth of their son, they named him Victor for Victory. His mother used totell her grandson stories that Victor was an active and mischievious, yet loving child. She said he loved to participate in sports and was a good athlete as well as a good student. He worked many hours in his father's restaurants while growing up, so developed an outstanding work ethic. His mother, GraceWall Anderson, relayed a story of the time(abt 1937) her son, Victor, left animportant football game they had won and was headed to the big dance. He decided to take a short cut through the park and after speeding through the park coming to an intersection. As he enteredthe intersection he didn't notice the red light and ran a couple off the road and into a ditch. Not noticing what he had just done, he continued speeding down the road. After a wonderful evening at the big college dance, he drove home and got into bed. He was awakened the next morning by his father, Ray, who had his arm outstretched and his hand open. His father asked for the keys and Victor asked why. His father informed him that he had run his mother and father off the road earlier in the evening. To say the least, he lost his driving privaleges for a while. He attended Ventura College for 1 1/2 years and would be recognized as a star runningback for Ventura College and was recognized by the state of California for his achievements as a back at Ventura as per his yearbook states. His college studies would be out on hold, as he would move with his parents to Napa just before the onset of WWII and would go to work at Mare Island Naval Shipyard as aclerk to earn money to continue his college education and wanted to continue to get his teaching degree. The 7th of December would chance his future plans forever. When he went to enlist in Santa Rosa, on 17 Jan 1942, he was immediately sent ot San Diego for training. His family expected him home, but he called and let them know he wouldn't be home. After his training, he would return home and he and his love, Elizabeth Rasler, to Reno and marry her on 10 September 1942, before leaving for tour duty in the Aleutian Islands. It would be over 2 yeaers before Elizabeth would see him again. His first assignment was on the U.S.S. Coghlin as Chief Yeoman and sent to the Aleutians after the Japanese had taken over islands there. Elizabeth, his wife, would relay a story to her son that the U.S.S. Coghlin was the ship he most favored to serve aboard. In the Aleutians, he was involved in the Batlle of Komandorski Islands, which was the longest surface battle of U.S. Naval history and is still the longest surface battle in American Naval history. The author of this family history has the report that Victor wrote for the Admiral describing the events of the battle. He was commended for his service during this battle, in which his ship saved another ship by laying smoke to protect the Japanese from zeroing its guns on his sister ship, the U.S.S. Bailey, the ship he would serve on in his battles in the Gilbert Islands(Tarawa), Marshall Islands, and the Phillipines. After laying smoke, they concentrated their guns on the Japanesed battleship to draw fire away from the Bailey. This gave the Bailey time to repair engines and get under way and elude the enemy. He would also be involdedin engagments in the Taron Islands, Lngayen Gulf, Luzon Islands, again in thePhillipines, and Layte. In one incident in the | |

Note* | Biographical Review of Cas, Schuyler and Brown Cos., Illinois - 1892 - Pg. 405 Vintson Anderson of section 13, Huntsville township, came here in 1835. Hewas born in Clermont Co., Ohio, in 1833. His father, William Anderson, was born in Mason County, May 14, 1800 (note from David Anderson-incorrect birthplace). He was the son of Andrew Anderson, who was born in Virginia (also incorrect, born in PA) and was of Irish descent. The family has resided in Americafor several generations. William Anderson was reared a farmer, and married in Kentucky in 1824, a Miss Prudence Wallingford, born in Kentucky, August 15, 1806. They migrated to Ohio in 1832, and resided there at Cincinatti, and in Clermont county, for three years and then came to Ilinois and located in Schuyler county. In spring of 1836, Mr. Anderson purchased a claim on section 13,in which is now Huntsville, and here he passed the remaining years of his life. He entered land and purchased more, until his real estate possessions amounted to 600 acres. He was a cautious man and never went into debt. He was a hard-working man, and in those days when the sickle wasa used to cut grain, hewas an expert in the use of the same, and still continued to use the hook after the cradle came into use. He died August 6, 1887. His wife is still living and is a member of the Christian Church. The two came with about $200 in capital, and in the time they lived in Illinois became rich and influential people. They had ten children, seven of whom grew up, namely, Jane Cady, Cyrus,Andrew, Vintson, Frank, Sarah McHatten and John Subject was two years old when the family settled in Schuyler county, and he resided at home until he attained his majority. His school advantages were limited. At the age of twenty-one he went to Fort Snelling, Minnesota, and broke prairie and engaged as cookto a gang of men who were cutting hay for the Government. At that date Minneapolis consisted of a sawmill and a few houses. He remained in Minnesota about six months and then returned to Illinois and egaged in making brooms at Clayton, Adams county, Illinois. He followed this business four years and then removed to Brown county, but after a few years residence there, removed to Schuyler county and settled where he now resides on land entered by his father. He has a farm of 105 acres. He is democrat in politics, and has been Road Commissioner for many years. He has filled that office with great credit to himself. He was married in 1858 to Jane McDonald of Brown county, born October 15, 1840, daugther of John B. and Sarah C. (Orr) McDonald. The former was bornin county, Antrim, Ireland, and came to the United States when a young man, and resided in the Southern States for a short time, but finally settled in Brown county in 1833, and soon after married Sarah C. Orr, who was the daugther of Mr. G. Orr, a settler in Brown county 1831. She was born in Tennessee in 1810. Mr. and Mrs McDonald had four children, all of whom are now married and well settled. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson have had seven children: Carrie, wife of William Nelson of Huntsville township; Cora, at home; William J. died in infancy; Frank C., at home; Pearl, at home; Myrtle, died at the age of four; and Nina E., at home. 1860 Federal Census: Huntsville, Schuyler Co., IL Vincent Anderson 26 M Farmer $300 OH Jane 19 F IL Carrie 1 F IL 1861- Militia Roll Records: Schuyler Co., IL List of all ablebodied male citizens in Schuyler county between the ages of 18 - 45 years subject to military duty.
