Note* | Stephen William Anderson was the youngest of the 11 children of Francis Anderson and Margaret Nesbit and was born April 2, 1924 on the the family farm in Indian Creek, Shady Nook, Harrison Co., KY. He was educated in a rural schoolhouse in Indiam Creek area and attended school through his early teens, when he went to work on his father's farm. We do know that Stephen was literate, as he was able to read and write as attested by his ability to sign court and land documents and maintain a family bible. Stephen attended the Indian CreekBaptist church, where he would become a lay minister and on February 13, 1851he would marry Jemima Jane Long, daughter of William Long and Nancy Maffett Long. Stephen would be given land owned by his father which adjoined his father's land. He also acquired part of the land his mother, Margaret, received when her mother, Sarah Nesbit, passed away as well as land from his aunt, Mary Nesbit. Stephen performed many weddings in Indian Creek for various Indian Creek Church families, as proven by marriage records in Harrison County. After the death of his mother and father, and his brothers moving from HarrisonCounty, to Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and Indiana, Stephen decided to move his family to Cass County, Missouri, as it was planned to be an important spur for the planned intercontinental railway lines that were being discussed at the time. He would spend the late 1850s and early 1860s selling his properties in Harrison County, and his wife's property as well, and setting up a homesteadin Strasburg, Polk Township, Cass County, MO. From hindsight, one wonders why he ever decided to settle in a border county with Kansas in Missouri, as there was great conflict going on at the time between pro and anti slavery factions. It is obvious that Stephen was not one to be aware of current events in the area, as the author of this family history assumes that if he had knownwhat was to come during the next four years, he would never have moved his family there at the time he did. Some of the documents showing sale and acquiring of property are included in this narrative to document this activity. May 28, 1953-January 1856 Mary NesbitÕs Heirs To Stephen Anderson Whereas Robert Nesbit and others filed their petition as plantiffs in the Harrison Curcuit Court on the 28th day of May 1853 ?raying for the sale of a tract of land situated in Indian Creek in said Harrison County and set forth in said petition and whereas at said tiem 1853 a judgement was rendered in said case directing asale thereof and William Anderson therin named as Commissioner to carry said judgement into effect wheras by advertising said land as required in said judgement effect the same for sale publicly to the highest bidder at the court house door in Cynthiana on the 11th day of July 1853 it being county court day and Stephen Anderson being the highest bidder became the purchaser. Thereof atthe price of twenty-two dollars per acre all of which William Anderson reported to said court and said sale was confirmed at the January term of said court1856 and order was made appointing Thomas Ward Commissioner to convey the land sold under a judgement of the court to Stephen Anderson the purchaser, under the sale ? a lien for any Balance of the purchase money that may remain unpaid. Therefore this Indenture witnesseth that the said Thomas Ward by ? of theauthority in him vested as Commissioner aforesaid for and on behalf of Robert Nesbit, William Robinson and his wife Jane his wife formerly Jane Nesbit andJohn Anderson, Willliam Anderson, Jemima Anderson, Elizabeth Stuart l ate Elizabeth Anderson, Mary Harris late Mary Anderson who are the children of Rachel Anderson deceased late Nesbit, and five children of Sarah McIlvain deceasedlate Sarah Nesbit the said names of five children of said Sarah are unknown, and William Nesbit and Jeremiah Nesbit who are ch | |
