His father, Calvin moved his family to Kansas, due to opportunities involving his work being a teamster, which in those days meant driving wagons of supplies. They would live there a short period of time and would return to Barton Co., Missouri in the spring of 1895 and continue his work as a teamster. He attended school in Barton County, MO in the same school that President Truman would attend and was close in age to Truman and may have attended school with him. Unfortunately, Ray's mother would die when he was 9 years old, so his father was responsible for raising him from then on. His brother, Charles, would move to California and by 1914 convinced the family to move to Riverside, so the father and remaining family members in Lamar, MO, move to Riverside, CA., and this is where Ray will meet his future wife, Grace Alice Wall. When Ray arrived in California, he enlisted in the Army and Navy and spent 1 year in the Army and 3 years in the Navy. Once he left the service he married Grace. He registered for the draft ofWWI, but did not serve. He would own numerous restaurants in the Los Angeles basin, Ventura, Ojai, Riverside and other communities. He would involve hiswife and children in running and operating the restaurants, which ment spending sixteen hour days of hard work. In the mid 1930s, Grace and Ray would moveto Napa, CA, where Ray would pass away in 1947, a month before the birth of his second grandchild, Marsha Rae Anderson. Ray was an interesting character, according to his wife, Grace, and his daughter-in-law, Ellizabeth Rasler Anderson. He did not believe in depositing money in banks (probably due to depression era experiences) and he did not believe in owning property(this could be due to is father's experiences growing up on the farm in Cass Co., MO during the Civil War). His wife Grace relayed the following story to the author of thisfamily history: 'Your grandfather(Ray) did not believe in owning property. When he married me(Grace), he was not aware that I had inherited beach front property in Long Beach, California. Once he did learn that I owned property, hetold her me I had to sell it, as he didn't want to be involved in owning property. After some heated discussions, I relented and sold the property. Threeyears later, the property was found to have major deposits of oil.' Poor Grace should have never followed her husband's orders to sell her property, as her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, as well as herself could have enjoyed the procedes from the oil, as did those that kept their oil laden properties. | |
