  1. "He was a shoemaker, manufacturer, and merchant. Photographs do not do him justice. I remember him well. In his late sixties he was a remarkably fine looking man, dignified, benevolent, snowy white hair and beard, blue eyes, fine rosy complexion, sympathetic, affectionate, not demonstrative. His granddaughter, my sister Grace Louis Prescott Hoffman, who was a very retiring disposition, was stricken with the fatal illness from which she died a Santa Barbara, California, 5 April, 1888, said to me: “ It seems good that Grandpa Prescott has died so soon before it does not seem so lonesome to follow him.'"
