Porter Dyer, first marriage for both; he died 24 May 1909 in La Grande, Union Co., OR, cause of death: bronchitis, contributory senility; age 71 years 9 months 25 days.
He is probably the male under 5 enumerated in the household of Samuel Prescott in Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in 1840.⁸

. John Hart Prescott appears in the census of 7 September 1850, Wheelock, Caledonia Co., VT, in the household of Samuel Prescott. John Hart Prescott appears in the census of 22 June 1860, Victory, Essex Co., VT, in the household of Freedom Densmore Prescott. John Hart Prescott was known to be the brother of Freedom Densmore Prescott. About six months before enlisting John Hart Prescott moved to Pawtucket, RI, where he worked as the driver of a tin peddling wagon.
John Hart Prescott enlisted on 25 November 1861, in Providence, RI, as a private, Captain John Rogers' Company F, 1st Rhode Island Cavalry Volunteers. He was described as age 25 years, 5 feet 10½ inches high, light complexion, grey eyes, light brown hair. After muster-in, the regiment was first sent to Washington, D.C., thence to Mannassas Junction and thence to Rappahannock Station and thence to a place called "Mud Camp" ... or Warrenton Junction, Virginia. While at Warrenton Junction, Prescott was sent to the regimental hospital three times. He accompanied the regiment on an expedition to Liberty, Virginia, where the company met Stonewall Jackson's command; then retreated to "Camp Mud" in May 1862. He was afflicted with a severe chill at Falls Church, VA, and was sent to Portsmouth Grove Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He remained there about 4 to 6 weeks and then returned to his regiment in Virginia. He took part in the battles of Cedar Mountain, Rappahannock Station and 2nd Battle of Bulls Run. He was slightly wounded in his left shin at the Battle of Bulls Run and was sent to the convalescent camp. He was discharged from military service on 14 February 1863 Convalescent Camp, Alexandria, VA, due to "valvular discease [sic] of heart contracted in service. Disability ½." Between May 1863 and 1869 John Hart Prescott resided in Worcester, MA. He worked as the foreman in Whit & Pratt's American Livery Stable Worcester, MA. Between 1869 and 1877 John Hart Prescott resided in Pawtucket, RI. He drove street cars between Pawtucket and Providence on the P&P Horse R.R. Co. Line Pawtucket, RI. Between 1877 and 1879 John Hart Prescott resided in Diamond Hill Plains, Providence Co., RI. He ran a boarding house in Diamond Hills Plain, Providence Co., RI. Between 1879 and 1880 John Hart Prescott resided in Providence, Providence Co., RI. He resided between 1880 and 1887 in East Providence, Providence Co., RI. He lived 3 miles northeast on the "Moran farm" which he leased. He had a vegetable farm there. He appears as head of household in the census of 7 June 1880 in East Providence, Providence Co., RI, with Sherburn Nathaniel Prescott, Ella Prescott, Austin F. Prescott, Aurilla Prescott, and Mary Ann Moore.⁴⁴ Between 1887 and 1888 John Hart Prescott resided in Rehoboth, Bristol Co., MA. He resided in 1888 Dorsey's Ferry, ID. He moved to Idaho for his health, living on the Snake River. Between 1888 and 1890 John Hart Prescott resided in Mountain Home, ID. He moved to La Grande, Union Co., OR, in March 1890. Freedom Densmore Prescott signed an affidavit on 30 September 1890 North Danville, Caledonia Co., VT, in support of his brother John Hart Prescott . "My brother the claimant came to our house about the month of February 1863, he having first been discharged from the service. He was in poor health and looked bad was very much emaciated and on exertion was very short of breath, his heart would palpitate, and the only way he seemed to get relief was by placing his back against the wall and standing straight. He was also greatly troubled with Dumb Ague caused as we supposed from the effects of Malaria, he remained with us a few weeks and when he left us he was some better, but we heard from him in Massachusetts later and that he was still in poor health." On 13 January 1896 John Hart Prescott resided in La Grande, Union Co., OR. He appears as head of household in the census of 8 June 1900 in 2nd Street, La Grande, Union Co., OR, with Austin F. Prescott, Frederick Lincoln Prescott, and Mary Ann Moore.⁴⁵ In 1902 John Hart Prescott resided in OR. John Hart Prescott is unnamed in the obituary of Freedom Densmore Prescott on 30 July 1902, but is inferred. The obituary states, "The only member of Mr. P's. immediate family now living is a brother who resides in Oregon." His occupation is listed as an insurance agent 1909 La Grande, Union Co., OR. His occupation is listed as a farmer.
Mary Ann Moore was born 4 July 1847 in Leominster, MA, daughter of John D. Moore, manufacturer, and Mary Ann ---, residing Leominster. Her birth was also listed as occurring on 4 July 1847 in Oakdale, MA, daughter of J.D.W. Moore, born Worcester, Mass. and Mary Ann Cather, born Ireland. Her birth was also listed as occurring in July 1847 in Shrewsbury, Worcester Co., MA, daughter of William Moore. Her birth was also listed as occurring in West Boyleston, Worcester Co., MA. She died 8 May 1914 in 1702 Walnut St., La Grande, Union Co., OR, cause of death: nephritis - uremia; age 66 years 10 months. She was buried on 10 May 1914 in La Grande, Union Co., OR. Mary Ann Moore appears in the census of 7 June 1880, East Providence, Providence Co., RI, in the household of John Hart Prescott. She had 7 children in 1900 . All were living at the time; no other children appear in their father's pension questionnaire. Mary Ann Moore appears in the census of 8 June 1900, 2nd Street, La Grande, Union Co., OR, in the household of John Hart Prescott.

Austin F. Prescott enlisted on 26 April 1898, in La Grande, Union Co., OR, as a Captain, Company D, 2nd Regiment Oregon Infantry. He was described as age 28 years, height 5 feet 8 inches, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair brown, occupation carpenter. His brother Sherburn served under him in the same company. Austin and his company sailed from San Francisco 26 May 1898 en route to the Phillipines. The company took part in the capture of Guam 21 June 1898 and were present at the attack on Manila 13 August 1898. Most of his company reports there state simply, "The Company has performed the usual Garrison duties, Police Patrol and safe Guarding in the City of Manila." The following is an extract of Special Order No. 185 dated 16 November 1898.
Captain A. F. Prescott, Second Regiment, Oregon U. S. Volunteers, is hereby directed to submit to these headquarters, with the least possible delay, plans and specifications complete for the construction of an Oven for a Post Bakery. All information necessary in reference to the construction of same, and the necessary material for plans and specifications, will be furnished on application to the Regimental Quartermaster.

Austin Prescott was discharged from military service on 25 July 1899 Presidio, San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA. He accepted a commission as Captain, 35th U.S. Volunteers on 26 July 1899 and his occupation is listed as Captain, U.S. Volunteer Infantry in the census of 8 June 1900. He appears in the household of his father John Hart Prescott. Although his 1898 enlistment paper does list him as married, his marital status is reported as single on this census. I do not have any record of a divorce. The following newspaper clipping was found in Peck family papers. The newspaper is not known and the date "August 1909" is handwritten on it.
Captain Austin S. Prescott, in charge of one of two companies of the Fifth regiment, United States infantry, which camped on the Danville road from Tuesday until Friday last weeke, entertained at a camp dinner Wednesday. His guests were his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Peck, Mr. and Mrs. Don Staples and three children of Danville and Mrs. Jennie Smith and son of Sheffield.

Sherburn Nathaniel Prescott; born 7 May 1876 in Providence, Providence Co., RI; married Helen Worsham 14 February 1923; he died 6 November 1936 in 139 Ocean Park Blvd., Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co., CA, cause of death: chronic myocardities and hypertension since about 1926 ["due to arteriosclerosis" is typed in]; passive congestion of lungs since October 1936 ["cardiac decompensation" is typed in]; age 60 years 5 months 29 days; buried 9 November 1936 in Valhalla Cemetery, Los Angeles Co., CA.

Sherburn Nathaniel Prescott enlisted on 26 April 1898, in La Grande, Union Co., OR, as a private, Company D, 2nd Regiment Oregon Infantry. At this time, he was described as age 22 years, height 5 feet 9-3/4 inches, complexion fair, eyes blue, hair brown; under comments: "Urethritis." His occupation is listed as a bottler 26 April 1898. Sherburn was promoted to the rank of corporal from private on 14 November 1898 per Special Order no. 184. While on the U.S.A. Transport Newport, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant 1 July 1899 "upon recommendation of the commanding officer of Company D, 2nd Oregon Infantry, U S V, approved by the Regimental Commander, in the place of Sgt. West, discharged." He was discharged from military service on 7 August 1899 at the Presidio in San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA, rank of Sergeant.
The index card for Prescott's files states, "see also Wagon Co. 23rd Eng. W. W." This may refer to a subsequent enlistment in the 23rd Engineers. This regiment was created by the War Department 15 August 1917 and activated 5 September 1917 at Camp Meade, Maryland. They were deployed to France in November of 1917 and earned the title of "The Road Builders of the AEF." The regiment returned to the United States in June of 1919 and was inactivated the same month. Sherburn Prescott's possible service in this organization has not yet been confirmed.

She, as Mrs. Jessie P. Nelson, informed the Pension Office of the death of Mary Ann Moore on 8 May 1914 1702 Walnut St., La Grande, Union Co., OR.⁴⁶ In 1957 Jessie Prescott and August P. Nelson resided in 508 North Avenue, La Grande, Union Co., OR.
