History of St. Joseph County, MICHIGAN - The Lewis Publishing Copg 624-626
'Born June 9, 1970 in PA, James Boles was there brought up and married. Soon
after his marriage he moved to Ohio and was a resident of Marion fo r anumber
of years. In 1835 he took advantage of the cheap land for sale by the
Government in the territory of Michigan, and came with his family t o St.Joseph
Co, being one of the first settlers in Fabius Twp. The land was in i ts
pristine wildness, with only an occasional householder. He entered t he
northwest quarter of section 28, paying the regulation of $1.25 an ac re,and
after building a rude log house, began the improvement of a homestead .He had
made but little progress , however, when in 1841, his death occurred ,while he
was yet a comparatively young man. His wife, whose maiden name was Phyanna
Hamilton, was born in PA and died on the farm in Fabius twp, June 188 5in the
91st year of her age, her birth having occurred 4 Sep 1794. To her a ndher
husband ten children were born as follows: Samson, John, Robert R., James C.S.,
Washington, Thomas H., Sophia,Elizabeth, Henry and Clarissa.
