Note* | [Alexandr.ged] from THE HISTORY OF CENTRAL CALIFORNIA - Dr. William Robinson was born in Athens Co., Ohio, September 12, 1828 , ason of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Hamilton) Robinson; the father di ed atZanesville, Ohio, in 1833. At the age of fourteen years, Dr. R obinsonassumed the responsibility of providing for himself, and unti l he wassixteen years old worked for $4 a month. In December 1844 , he went toDes Moines, Iowa, and there took up a government claim , on which hebuilt a cabin. In a short time he went to schuyler cou nty, Illinois,and there engaged in the trade of broom-making. In 18 47 he enlisted inthe service of the Government in the war against Me xico, being a memberof Company C, eommanded by Captain N.C. Cummungh am. He was honorablydischarged July 7, 1848, and September 1 of th e same year, he went toIndependence, Missouri, where he was in the e mploy of the railroadcompany. He then returned to Schuyler county , Illinois, and worked atthe cooper's trade until 1850. In that yea r he was married to SusannaWoodruff, and they removed to Henderson c ounty, Illinois, where hedevoted his energies to agriculture until 1 854. His next abiding placewas Oskaloosa, Iowa, and there he farme d and worked at the cooper'strade until 1863. Then came the call fo r additional troops to defendthe old flag, and he volunteered in Cap tain Sherry's Third Iowa CAlvary;he was in the Quartermaster's depar tment at Davenport for nine months,when he was discharged on accoun t of the death of his wife. He workedat the carpenter's trade fo r a while, and in September 1869, he wasmarried to Miss Melissa You nker. They then removed to Missouri, wherehe farmed from 1869 to 18 74. Then followed the journey to California,where he owns one of th e finest and most productive farms in MercedCounty; the land is i n a high state of cultivation, and is wellimproved. Mr & Mrs. Robinson are the parents of the following named childre n:William II.; Joshua A.; Annie, wife of Joseph Brady, of Kansas Cit y;Addie, wife of Peter F. Skelly; James; Nellie, wife of Joseph Harr igan,of San Francisco; Bennie, Frank, Flora, and Sheldon, who died a t the ageof twenty years. The Doctor's career has been marked with many changes, and he has experienced many different phases of life, but the attractions of th eGolden State have been sufficient to hold him, and he is one of the most hig hly esteemed citizens of his county.
